Teaching Our Daughter Early

Filed under: bible reading, bibles — Ted Johns @ 1:06 pm

Susan and I are already teaching Susannah words and language and music and reading. We talk to her in non-baby language, we read to her and we sing often to her. She is getting used to it. I want to give Susannah the opportunity to be a reader and a future leader right from the start. That is the legacy my mother gave me from a very young age.

My mom read the bible to me from the time I was in her womb until she went to be with the Lord eleven years later, and I am doing the same for my daughter. We are reading the bible to her most every night. And the number of different bibles that are out there is wonderful. She read to me from the Living Bible, but I know some families have Catholic bibles and some families have King James Bibles and still others are reading the latest versions of the bible. We are reading from the New International Version of the bible to Susannah.

And while we read from the bible to her, we are instilling in her the very words of life. Two birds with one stone.

Day 11: We are Learning As New Parents

Filed under: bibles — Ted Johns @ 6:42 pm

It has been almost two weeks since Susannah was born and we are learning all the time. Every moment we pick her up to feed her or just hold her, we learn something new all the time. How can we help but not learn?

We are learning her cries. The cry when she is having a little pooh, the cry when she is a little hungry, the big cry when she is really unhappy and really hungry. And then balancing the feedings so she doesn’t get too much. I have had a few spit-ups. No fun.

We are learning that when she is calm, she loves to listen to her mommy’s voice and her daddy’s voice. We often read to her or just sing to her. We read from Psalm 139. That is one of my favorite psalms. We read it from the Living Bible sometimes because it just has a way of bringing it into simple terms. I have a Catholic Bible that was given to me by a Korean friend, but we aren’t Catholic, so we don’t read from it. It seems to be similar to the King James Bible. But I digress.

God is teaching us so much through our daughter. It is so gratifying.
